Aiden’s reaction Christmas morning was priceless. First off, he woke up at about 5:30 and wasn’t antsy about looking to see what Santa brought but more interested to go see if Santa ate the cookies we had set out for him. When we did go out and look, he saw the nerf gun that Santa had left him under the tree and the first thing out of his mouth was “OH, NO WAY!”, followed a few seconds later by “UUhhh” (said in a whiny tone), because Santa hadn’t brought him a “Power Ranger sword” (the only gift he had asked Santa for this year). Lucky for Aiden, Santa must have known that Grandpa J had gotten him one. Christmas morning was a lot of fun this year with Aiden as he thoroughly enjoyed opening his gifts and having family here. Kiptyn sat in my lap while I opened his presents and made it about 3/4 of the way through them before he did not want to sit and watch anymore at all. He did like looking at some of it when I opened the toys though.

For some reason though, a month or so after Kiptyn was born my mom brought to my attention the fact that Aiden’s eyes were no longer blue. How I missed that I will never know, but sure enough he now has hazel eyes that vary from blueish to green with specs of brown toward the center….Halleluyah, there is hope for this child to look like me after all, even if only in this small way! His eyes are still bright and radiant, just no longer a solid blue like his Daddy.

True to form lately, I am behind. However I could not pass up the opportunity to get this one on the books. Aiden was very excited leading up to Christmas this year and learned a few of the staple songs. We were listening to Christmas music in the car but Aiden also learned 3 songs for his first ever school performance. So the highlight for me was the day he came home singing them…”deck the halls with bunch of holly” and “tis the season to be sorry”. I about died laughing. He was also very cute Christmas morning when he came out to see what Santa brought and as he approached the tree and saw a huge nerf gun he said “oh, no way!!”

I cannot seem to find the time to get on here and up date the blog as often as I’d like to, but things seem to finally be settling down with having a newborn in the house…FINALLY! Kiptyn is getting so big and changing so quickly. We have seen a relief from Kiptyn’s colicky symptoms for the last 3 weeks or so. I don’t know if he truly had colic but our nights were sure filled with a fussy baby who had gas and a belly ache. Thanks to gas relief drops and my mom’s “old wives” tricks we made it through. Diluted camomile tea saved us on more than one occasion and worked within minutes, usually. He is such a good eater and was such a good sleeper up until this last week and a half. He was sleeping through the night so well and now he is back to waking up 2 or 3 times a night again. It is quite an adjustment reverting back to that. Usually it is just to eat, but occasionally now he just needs to be walked around to go back to sleep. Last night he started rolling himself sideways and arching his back, trying to roll over, though he didn’t quite make it. He sure was trying though. He is adorable when he smiles and laughs – it just melts my heart. Aiden has grown into a great big brother. He is very helpful and likes touching Kiptyn’s cheeks when talking to him and doting on him. Aiden tries giving Kiptyn his rattles and stuffed animals, but Kiptyn just isn’t to that point yet – he does grasp onto things though now if they happen to get in his hand while he is opening and closing them when his toys are on his belly or chest. He tries helping Kiptyn with the pacifier in the car and is good at giving us status updates, like “he is sleeping” or my favorite is “he is trying to go to ‘da sleep”.

Kyle and I welcomed baby number 2 on September 2, 2011 at 8:36 p.m. Although I was induced this time around too, I have to say this second experience was not as long or as frightening as the first go round. After a 10 hour 15 minute labor I saw a wonderful baby boy who looked just like his big brother. When told he was a big brother and that the baby looked just like him, Aiden said “no he doesn’t, he looks different”. Apparently he wanted his brother to be his own person! Aiden was however, ecstatic about becoming a big brother and has proven to be loving and helpful with Kiptyn. When he first met him he showered him with kisses, wanted to hold him and repeatedly said (for a couple of weeks) “he’s so gorgeous”. He also quickly learned that “my baby brother is fragile”, too. Another occurence upon figuring out that I had had the baby was that within a couple of days Aiden asked me if I could starting picking him up and carrying him again. For the latter part of my pregnancy I couldn’t pick him up like I had previously and carry him around, which was a little bit of a touch pill for Aiden to swallow. My hope is that Aiden continues to adjust to his brother being around and that they forge a close bond as Kiptyn gets older.

I guess it’s true what they say…You always get paid back for the things you did as a child. For the last couple of months Aiden asks me every night “can you scratch my back”? Prior to that I always used to rub his back for a minute when tucking him in at night, but somehow that got upgraded to scratching his back. I don’t mind and I think it is kind of our bonding moment at the end of the day. In fact, I can remember asking my mom to do the same thing when I was younger and I always loved it. Shoot, I would love it if someone would still scratch my back on a daily basis…there is something calming about it. The best about him asking me to do this though is that on 3 different occasions earlier on in this process he told me how good it felt when I scratched his back because my nails were sharp, “sharp like a razor”. I don’t know how he knows that but it is a good analogy I guess.

I know I have mentioned before that Aiden is getting quite the education due to the fact that he goes with me to my prenatal visits with the OB. From going into the bathroom and asking if he has to pee in the cup too, to seeing the ultrasounds and hearing the heartbeat. We have gone to numerous ultrasounds at this point that now he asks the tech to show him the heartbeat every time. He must think it is the best part about it because that is the only thing he is concerned with anymore. He also asks about hearing it every time we go for the doctor’s checkup, also. What I think is funny now though, is that because we go so frequently, and he hates waiting around, he occupies our wait time in the room by playing doctor. I am sitting on the exam table, and instead of him sitting on the visitor’s chair he sits on the doctor’s rolling chair, wheels himself over to the edge of the exam table and asks me questions. It always starts out with “how you feeling today”? and then varies from there. On our most recent visit, two days ago, he then proceeded to ask me, “how’s your bones feeling?”, I said good so then he feels my belly and asks “how’s your belly bones today?”, my belly bones are good…”how’s your baby”, my baby is good and moving around a lot… He just smiled back at me and let out a little chuckle. I can’t help but laugh every time because he tries to be really serious and announces that “I am your doctor” – cracks me up. He now has also made friends with the nurse who initially comes in to take my blood pressure, etc., so she lets him squeeze the bulb to take my blood pressure each time.

To start this one off…Aiden is taking a shower a couple of nights ago and had an animal washcloth on his hand still. I had told him a couple of times to put it down so he could get out and get dried off. All of a sudden he holds his hand up, washcloth intact, puts his other hand on his hip and in tune with the actual Beyonce song, busts out with “all the single ladies, all the single ladies”. I had to laugh and I couldn’t figure out why he had that in his head or how he really knew the song. I asked him and he told me it was from Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, which he had watched the day before. It all made sense after that.

Lately Aiden has also been making words up. I guess he isn’t really making words up but combining words to make what he thinks are funny ones. For instance, one of his common ones lately is doodoo-butt, or poopy-head, and such. Not attractive at all if you ask me. He says them to us like he thinks it is something hysterical that we should find funny or be impressed with, as he says them.

He has also been asking me when the baby is coming. He seems really excited to become a big brother and says that he is going to take care of his baby brother. Everytime I have a doctor’s appointment that I tell him about or one where he goes to with me, he asks if we are going to the doctor because the baby is coming. I told him when the baby is ready to come we are going to go to the hospital, not the doctor’s office. He is still giving my belly hugs and kisses and often tells Kiptyn goodnight.

One last story for today…Aiden and I were walking into daycare a few mornings ago, and Aiden had been pretending some plastic linked discs that he puts together, were a gun (pretty typical). I, as usual, asked him if he was supposed to be playing guns and shooting people. He said “no”, and then followed it up with “but when I get big daddy is going to buy me a gun and then we going to gun training”. He had it all figured out, and I said “oh yeah, says who?” – “Daddy!” Well, okay then. As a side note to this – it amazes me how little boys automatically play guns, can pretend any toy is a gun, and how easily and readily they can make gun sounds. Aiden has a spot on machine gun sound. I can’t do it…I have one gun sound and I am sure it has not resemblance of a real gun.

Aiden never really went through the terrible twos but some days I wonder about the furious fours. He has never been one to really throw a fit or do the whole kicking and screaming bit, although he can be a big whiner. Lately though, he has been into the pouty face and crossing his arms over his chest when he gets mad or if he is playing on the floor he will kind of whine/cry and kick his feet. The kicking of the feet often ends up in the kicking of his toys, and on occasion us, if we happen to be sitting by him when he does this. Most of the time his little fits occur just after telling him he can’t have something he asked for, or can’t watch a movie he wants to watch, etc. I finally told him that every time I see him do that now he is going to get a time out. This has helped a little in the last few days, but boy is this stuff a challenge sometimes.

I know my posts are usually all about Aiden, but I thought I would throw one in about Aiden’s Mommy this time. I am currently 31 weeks 5 days along with baby number 2, who is slated to be named Kiptyn Cole. I have to say…I don’t know if this pregnancy is really just completely different physically for me or if everything else going on in my life has compounded to make this pregnancy a little more rough, but boy am I telling you, it is ROUGH! So many things are different this time though too – First and foremost I am going through the latter part of my pregnancy during the heat of the summer in Phoenix (105 degrees lately with humidity), I have a very active 4 year-old to keep up with, I am a little overwhelmed finishing up my Masters in Occupational Therapy, and according to my doctor the reason I am experiencing lower abdominal tightness, leg pain and pelvic floor pain is because pregnancy number one (thank you Aiden) made some of my ligaments lax and with each subsequent pregnancy they may feel the pressure more. Thank you doctor for making me feel like I am a 40 year-old having my 15th child! For goodness sake, I am not even 30 yet. I still wouldn’t trade feeling the baby kick and move around for anything in the world. I think it is one of the most amazing things a woman can experience that is uniquely ours and profoundly amazing!
